I am Still Here

I really have read most of your blogs and tried to comment on some. Its just a busy time for me. I have been making 2 and 3 trips to the post office each day to mail out soaps. Trying to get all the gifts wrapped and stockings stuffed for Christmas weekend starting this Friday. Trying to get things done around here and the animals taken care of. Miss Diva does not like to be ignored! I am trying to finish printing Christmas cards and I haven't even put a Christmas tree yet! I am so far behind but hope to get caught up after the weekend. Just think I will have lots of photos of hayrides, children, toys, and Megan opening her sesame street game in front of the fireplace to share with you when I get back! So forgive me for not posting much this week and I promise to be back full force Monday. Don't forget to post when you receive your swap stocking.

My Swap Stocking Arrived!

I am so excited! I received my stocking today from my swap partner Miss Pea! She has been reading up on me as she filled my stocking with all my favorites! I am in love with snowmen and she took care of me in that department. I now have snowman scissors, snowmen kitchen towels, snowmen SOCKS! You know I love my holiday socks! A beautiful snowman ornament in a snowman's velvet bag, I got the cutest little cheese/jam servers with a Christmas tree handle and a snowman handle. Christmas tea and truffle hot chocolate mix filled my stocking along with my favorite gift of all... Some of Miss Pea's homemade chocolates!! All the items came in a snowman stocking of course! Thank you so very much Pea! Thank you for taking part in my first swap and thank you for being a wonderful caring swap partner! Below the photos is the list of swap partners so you can check in to see what they receive in their stocking. Thanks again Pea!!
Well blogger is having fun tonight and keeping me from posting anymore photos of my stocking. Will try to post more later.

Uncle Bob

Uncle Bob was my mother's brother. He retired from the phone company and spent his retirement years hiking parts of the Appalachian Trail each year. He almost made it to the end but last year he had to be air lifted off the trail for what was later found to be stomach cancer. We all helped him and his wife Judy celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary a few months ago. He took me on the hike back into where he and mother were born and raised . We hiked 2 miles in and 2 miles out. I had a hard time keeping up with him. He showed me where the house use to stand, where the garden was and where they played in the creek. He helped me find pieces of dishes, pottery, etc to make my daughters shadow boxes for Christmas with things from their Nannies homeplace. Uncle Bob was a quiet but a very kind and loving man. He could pull a prank with the straightest face and you would fall for it everytime. Uncle Bob was not only a very special uncle, he was the best dad and grandpop to his children and grandchildren. He won't ever get the chance to finish hiking the trail because he is on a wonderful new journey. Uncle Bob died this afternoon.

Decorating Time

Time to hang the wreath on the door, put up the lights, decorate the house, start baking, shopping, wrapping, writing cards, well you know the routine. Though this time of year brings on lots of extra things to our to do list its a magical time. A time when everyone is nice to everyone. Everyone is thinking and praying for peace on earth. The time of year when we bring out the kid in us. I love this time of year! It seems to bring out the best in everyone.. Even Scrooge! So enjoy the magic of the season and go hang that wreath on the door!

Black Friday

Things are a little crazy around the homestead at the moment. Last night I needed to vent but was the only one at home. Thank goodness for email and friends! Philip from Tossing Pebbles sent this poem to me weeks ago and I enjoyed it then but think I really need today. Wishing each of you a good day and hope you aren't getting trampled in the shopping madness.

Windy, Rainy Day

It has poured rain for 2 whole days without letting up. While its been raining, the wind has blown and the sleet and snowflakes came now and then. Thanks to the rain I have a pond in my backyard
Thanks to the wind I now have or had as I moved it a tree limb on the dog fence. Bent it a little but fence is still up.
We may be having a northeasterner coming thru but the animals are dry and fed, I have a big pot of chili cooking, a nice warm fire going. When I have to wade thru the "pond" to check on the animals or get wood my feet don't mind because I have my boots keeping them dry!
Enjoy the evening. Don't stress over preparing your Thanksgiving meal. Be thankful for the many blessings of the day even boots to keep your feet dry!

Cat Nap

Its cold and rainy with a mixture of sleet so its an inside day. While I am trying to catch up on household chores seems like the felines have a better ideal on what to do on a rainy day.
Groucho decided to take over the blanket I had on the sofa as his napping place. He is all snuggled down for a long afternoon nap.
Dimples picked the top of Bud's house for her napping place. Right in the middle of my Christmas Carolers. She was smart though as the woodstove is in the diningroom so she picked the warmest spot!

Whiskers picked the sofa across from Groucho for his napping spot. He has to have room to spread out as he thinks he is a big cat. He wasn't very happy that the flash woke him up but he was soon snoring again.

I think I will work a little longer on my memory blankets and then find a cat free spot and take a nap myself.

This and That

Today has been a busy day. I have been cleaning and working on the camper as we have a friend and her daughter coming to stay at the homestead. Sabrina and her daughter Katrina are going to come and help with the milking, feeding, gardening, etc. Its going to be so nice to have help and be able to take some time away from the homestead without worrying about getting back to milk and feed. They are going to stay in our camper until we get our second building built where we are going to put an apartment in the upstairs. They will be here after Thanksgiving and I can't wait! I have been working on Christmas cards and swap packages. Got most of my soap orders in the mail too. We now have 20 baby chicks! My family Christmas weekend is the first weekend in December so I have been working on my gifts for that. I still have memory blankets to finish. Our family always do homemade or secondhand gifts. Its so much fun searching flea markets and thrift shops for gifts. We are also giving vintage picnic baskets with home canned goods and homemade jams and jellies that I made this summer. We will include eggs and homemade soaps in the basket too. I had several sellers on etsy contact me and ask if I would trade some of my soaps for items in their shops. Now I have handmade gifts from them to give and they got soaps from me for gifts. The family is so big that we all were spending way too much money on gifts for everyone so a few years ago we came up with this ideal and had so much fun with it we decided to do it every year. We always make a weekend of it with a hayride and caroling, Happy Birthday Jesus cake, stockings, gifts, big Christmas dinner and lots and lots talking, teasing, playing with all the kids and just being together. This year we are going to Megan's (my youngest daughter). They live in the old homeplace where my girls grew up. Its the same house that we lived in when the girls were very small playing a brand new sesame street board game in front of the fireplace. They kept arguing over the pieces of the game and I finally told them if they had one more argument I was throwing their brand new game in the fire. A few minutes later a argument started and not saying a word I walked over, picked up the game and tossed it in the fire. The girls mouths dropped open and they just sat there watching it burn. They never forgot what I did and all the grandkids have heard the story many times. This year I have the board game wrapped up to give Megan (I got one just like the first one off ebay and its been played so its second hand) with a note saying " If you don't behave this one will go in the fire too!". I think since we will be opening gifts in front of the same fireplace its just the perfect gift. Don't you think? LOL

Making Christmas Cards

Do you realize how long and how many photos it takes to get one halfway decent for your Christmas cards? Miss Diva loves dressing up and wearing hats as long as they don't fall in her face or cover her ears. She hates having her ears touched! Well the santa hat falls in her face, covers her eyes if she moves and it had to touch her ears to sit on her head. I spent an hour putting the hat on her head, getting the camera ready only to have her shake the hat off. I got lots of blurry photos, photos without the hat, photos with the hat in the air and even one with the hat under Diva's hoof. She actually had an evil grin on her face in that one! Finally when she realized I wasn't giving up she just stood very still, closed her eyes and seemed to say this is all your getting so hurry up. I took the photo, she didn't move. I checked to see if the photo turned out, she didn't move. I took the santa hat off, she ran to the other side of the pen! So this is the photo that will be on Hidden Haven's Christmas cards. I am not going back out there with the santa hat as I think she would put me instead of the hat under her hoof!

I Just Couldn't Wait

I love snowmen! Since Mary was nice enough to fix my blog with snowmen for me (thanks again Mary) I have been wanting to get out my snowmen decorations. I decided to just get out a few of the snowmen just so it would look like winter around here. So here are photos of a few (believe me I have lots more) of my snow people. I just can't wait to get them all out!
The snowmen around the little tree are on a coffee table that I decoupaged with postcards from last years postcard swap. The coffee table is a wooden packing crate that I stained. I have the postcards on the top and all four sides. Whenever I sit on the sofa I see the postcards and think of my wonderful blog swap partners. I have 8 snowmen around the tree and enjoying looking at them and wishing for snow when I sit on the sofa!

Thankful Thursday

Today I am thankful that I am safe, warm and dry in our home. There are bad storms allover NC and several people have been killed. I am very thankful I have a place to get out of the weather. A place I can rest at the end of a day. I am blessed to have a home where so many in this world are homeless. I am blessed I can be safe and warm while others have no place to go for safety and warmth. Today I am very thankful for our home.

Bonnie Gaye Roper 1948 - 1980

I lost my sister to cancer when she was still a young mom with so much to live for. Sometimes its hard to understand why we lose the ones we love before we think its time. I look forward to seeing her smile and sparkling eyes again one day. Happy Birthday Sis, I love you.

I've gotten used to missing you,
My grief's begun to ease;
I don't sit down to write you notes
Or phone to shoot the breeze.
When in a crowd someone may laugh
Or sound a lot like you;
And then the pain will grip my heart
And flood my soul anew.
I've gotten used to missing you,
I'm learning day by day
To focus on good memories
And put the rest away.
On strong days I scan photographs
Of happy times we knew;

I picture Jesus in my mind
And place Him next to you.
I've gotten used to missing you,
And though it's been 26 years;
I still am just a thought away
From aching and from tears
But my sorrow will have an end,
So let the teardrops pour;
Until I'm once again with you
And the One who loves you more.

http://hiddenhavenhomestead.blogspot.com/2006/10/christmas-stocking-swap.html

On a different note we now have 14 baby chicks. K.J. is on parole as he has been on his best behavior for a few hours. Since he was so good I let him go on leave from lockup for a few minutes. He took a cruise around the neighborhood (livingroom) then was ready to go back to lockup with the other chicks.

Thank You Mary!

Mary over at Fireflies and Frogs did a wonderful job on my blog! I am so dumb when it comes to templates, html's and codes so Mary came thru for me. She spent alot of time making everything so perfect. Thank you Mary until you are better paid. Thank you so much! I Love it!

Last Chance

Okay people its the last chance to sign up for the Christmas Stocking Swap. If you have already signed up please send me your mailing address and your blogsite. I will not pass your addy on to anyone except your swap partner. So if you want in speak now or forever hold your peace.

Now up to 10 baby chicks and K.J. is out of solitary for a little while as the other chicks are ganging up on him when he pecks!

Etsy has a new updated verison and has added a shopping cart! When you get a chance you should check out the new esty.

Thumper has a wife. I was at the feed store and bought a sweet female rabbit I named Flower. I put her in with Thumper and within 20 seconds Thumper did what male rabbits do with female rabbits so we may have baby bunnies in 31 days. You can't blame Thumper as he has been single for 5 years!
Will try to post photos tomorrow as I am in a rush to get things done before going to a womens circle meeting tonight.

Peeps

We are now up to 8 baby chicks. 3 were hatched this morning. They are so adorable except K.J. S/he was the black one that was first hatched. I have never seen a chick so mean! I even brought my neighbor over to see how mean K.J. (killer junior) is. I had to close off a corner of the box to keep it away from the others. As soon as I remove the barrier its runs straight to the other chicks and starts pecking them. In the eyes, head, back and even tries to peck their feet so they will fall and it can peck them more! I sat for 2 hours the other night by the box and everytime K.J. started to peck another chick I would peck his beak with my finger and sat him in a corner. K.J. got real smart and knew when I was watching and wouldn't peck. As soon as he thought I had moved away from the box (I hid) he started pecking. When I was back he stopped. The poor chicks just cry and cry when he is free because he hurts them. So for now K.J. is in solitary confinement. I will keep trying each day to teach him to get along. I have a feeling K.J. is going to grow up to be one mean rooster! He does like sitting in my hand and letting me pet him although he did deposit a little present right before I put him back in the box! Killer still has 7 eggs under her, Betty Boop has 6 and Blondie has 8 so the homestead has more fun times ahead.
The photo above doesn't show it but K.J. was pecking Little Red while the others were backing away from him. I sat him with the rest to take the picture. Will take one later of solitary.

TA DAAAAAAAAAA

I couldn't use my mothers antique mirror because the frame was too thick to go behind the washstand. I couldn't use another big antique mirror I had for the same reason. William and I got this real old mirror from an estate sale. Its only 11x14 but very heavy. I painted the trim and when hung it seems to capture the old country theme I am going with.
Right after hanging the mirror I couldn't wait to hang my country angel wall hanging Lisa made me! Lisa it is perfect, thank you soooo much!
Here are a couple more of my country angels and my towel rack. Another country angel, tissue holder and some of my bathroom tins.
The light fixture over the washstand and a peek at the wallpaper.
Couldn't have it all angels. Here are some of the vintage bathroom signs I collected so William would know its his bathroom too.
Another light fixture, towel rack and sign.
Here is my new floor and my vintage crock that I am using for a waste can. Its old so some of the paint on the outside has chipped off. I decided to leave it like that .

Sneak Peek

There is still touch up painting to do, clean the paint off the window, hang the mirror, put the globes on the light fixtures, hang the towel rack, tp holder, hang all my angels and my special angel wall hanging and other odds and ends. . Its so close to be being finished! Will post photos when its complete but I just had to give you a sneak peek!
There will be a mirror behind the washstand hopefully Monday.
Yes, that is a ladder you see in the shower. Guess the handyman was in a hurry to get home for supper and forgot to put it away. But who cares, my bathroom is almost finished!!!!!

Where is Winter?

Yesterday was in the mid 70's and today may even reach 80! Mother Nature is sure having fun with the weather! I packed away all the summer clothes. The jackets, sweaters, sweats, hats and mittens are all laundried and waiting. I love cold weather. I love going out to feed and milk and feeling the cold air against my face, see my breath. I love when it gets snowy and icy and we have a nice fire in the stove, pot of soup simmering on top, tea kettle singing its tune. I love when the power goes off and we can light our oil lamps and snuggle down and read all the books we haven't had time for all summer. Feel free to remind me of this post when Mother Nature gives me what I wished for! On a different note the peepster has company. Peepette was waiting under Betty Boop for me this morning. No, I don't know if they are he and she but right now I am calling them that. When they are older and have their own little personality I will give them there real names. So 2 chicks hatched and around 28 more to go!

Peep Peep

Killer was worse than normal this morning. I always check to see if any of her eggs have hatched and she always bites me. Not peck but bring the blood bites. This morning as soon as she saw me walk into the chicken lot she started squawking . I hadn't even gotten near her so I knew something was up. Killer is the proud mom of a baby chick. Its not really hers as she is a bantam that likes sitting on other hens eggs but she is a mom just the same. I have brought the chick inside as I didn't want the other hens pecking it. Peepster is in a box with a heatlamp and has been eating. drinking and peeping all afternoon. When I want a little peace and quiet I take it out of the box and wrap it in a wool rag and hold it. Peepster goes to sleep and is quiet for awhile. It won't be lonely for too long as Killer has more eggs to hatch and so do Betty Boop and Blondie. All 3 are bantams sitting on big brown eggs. They won't sit on the little bantam eggs no matter how much I try to get them to so they are going to be small moms with BIG babies!
This is Killer this afternoon after I took Peepster from her. She still has 9 eggs left to hatch.
And that is Peepster! He/she is black with a white spot on its head and chest. Cute but loud!

Bathroom

As of this evening the bathroom has a toilet, shower, floor, ceiling, paneling, wallpaper, border and door. There is still baseboards, trim, chair railing and sink to go. This one week project is going on 4 weeks. I can only imagine how long it will take to redo the kitchen. Hopefully I can take photos tomorrow evening of a finished bathroom. If not please forward all emails to the padded room at the mental hospital!

Thankful Thursday

Today I am thankful for the military. I have the freedom of sleeping in my nice warm bed, going wherever I please, read what I want, watch what programs I want. I can go to whatever church I please or not. I have the freedom to enjoy all these things because soldiers will leave their nice warm beds, their families, to make sure I keep my freedom. While I am sitting down to a nice Thanksgiving dinner there will soldiers away from home fighting for my freedom. While I am sitting around the Christmas tree with my family there will be soldiers giving up that pleasure just to give me that freedom. So today I say thank you to every military person, active or vet. I say thank you to each member of their family. Today I am thankful we have soldiers ready to put their family lives on hold so America can stay the land of the free.

Before I Wake by Dee Henderson

Dee Henderson is the author of many best sellers. Before I Wake is not one of them. The story is about a former FBI agent ,Rae going into the private investigating with her former boyfriend, Bruce in Justice, IL. They end up working with the sheriff, Nathan to try to solve several murders. Do the good guys win? Who gets the girl? After reading this book I still don't have the answers. If there is going to be a sequel to finish the story I doubt I will read it to find out. This book of 381 pages should have been written in 100 pages. Too many useless filler pages and terrible grammar. The only good thing I can say is I didn't have to buy this book to read it.

I am a 53 yr. old retired lab tech that reviews books for Active Christian Media. I don't receive any compensation for my reviews. On a scale of one to 5 five I give Before I Wake a one.

New Finds

On the way home Saturday William passed a church yardsale. He came home, picked me up and we headed back. On the way to the yardsale we pass a auction. We hurry up at the yardsale where we picked up bookshelves, books, videos and a couple of items the son in laws collect which will be Christmas gifts. Then we go to the auction. There was a secretary that I loved and bid on till it got to $40 and I stopped. William kept bidding and won at $55.00 I love it! I bid on 2 antique end tables and won them both for $30.00. William bid on a couple of boxes and we finished out the auction spending $92.00. Pretty good for these don't you think?
The above photo is the desk closed

The above photo is the desk opened

This is one of the end tables. they are identical. I love the dropleaf sides and the claw feet.

New Bathroom

Wanna see my new bathroom?????????

Well do you?????????

Are you sure???????

Really really sure?????

Its not what you think as far as bathrooms go.
Its our new outdoor bathroom! Just kidding. the tub is going to be a water garden/birdbath and the toilet is going to have ferns growing in the bowl and ivy growing from the tank. William helped me place them between 2 huge magnolia trees near the birdfeeders in the backyard. Of course I put them in the backyard as I didn't want just anyone thinking I was crazy! As for my dream bathroom, I have a toilet and a shower. Tomorrow I am suppose to get the chair rail and baseboards up so the sink can go in. William has been home for a few days. His grandson has been visiting for a few days and its rained so we are alittle behind. I guess I can be patient a couple more days.

The Animal's Rule The Homestead

I have been going out in the early afternoons and letting the animals out to roam around the property. They have now decided its an everyday event and have even decided what time of day they think they should go out. Miss Diva is waiting with Ethel on her back for me to open the door and let them out.

Here are the rest of the ladies and gents waiting to get out.

Miss Diva is even being nice and letting the hens go first.

They had a nice long afternoon of scratching around. They even scratched all the mulch I put in the flower beds for the winter. Miss Diva followed me around and when I came inside she decided to watch William work. She did try to push the back door open with her head. All she accomplished was a dirty glass door. Nice sunny day here today. Where is winter?

Answering Questions

1 . Here is a photo of GoGo Beans with Noah. He looks kinda like Curious George but isn't as Noah informed them when they tried to replace GoGo Beans. Noah is loving the postcards. Thanks everyone! Its okay if he gets more than one postcard from the same area. Afterall GoGo Beans is suppose to be visiting everyone.

2. No its not too late to join the Stocking Swap. Just click on the site addy and leave a comment. For those of you that have already signed up please email me your mailing address and your blogsite. I know I may have most of that information but humor this old lady!
http://hiddenhavenhomestead.blogspot.com/2006/10/christmas-stocking-swap.html

3. Bud has finally forgiven me for bringing him inside. Yesterday was the first day he let me pet him. He lets you know its okay to pet him when you hold out your hand and he closes his eyes. If his eyes don't close beware as he will smack you with his tail if you try to pet him!

4. The bunny name with the most votes was Thumper. Wendy A from Tazmania won a gift basket of Miss Diva's soaps for having the winning name.

5.I am reading "The Englisher" by Beverly Lewis. I finished "Before I Wake" by Dee Henderson and need to do a review on it but can't. I read the book weeks ago and I usually read a book quickly. This one I kept putting down as it seemed to have alot of filler pages if you know what I mean. But I will do the review sometime this weekend.

Wow, I didn't have many questions to answer this time. Guess you are getting to know more about me then you ever thought you wanted to know. LOL

The beadboard is up but still have the trimwork and lots of other things. Hopefully the bathroom will be finished Monday. I hope! I just don't have patience but know it will be finished soon.

Bathroom

Slowly the bathroom is starting to come together. Tonight I was able to hang the wallpaper and border. The wallpaper only goes a quarter of the way down the wall. The rest will be beadboard. Tomorrow morning the dropped ceiling, beadboard and chair rail go up and hopefully the light fixtures. We are hoping all will be done by Saturday night but we shall see.
I was walking by Bud's house and noticed he had fell asleep while eating his supper. It's after midnight and he is still sleeping with his face in his food dish. What a nice lazy life he is having. Time for me to turn in before I fall asleep with my face on the keyboard. Have a good night!

What Did I Do Today?

Spent most of the day outside. Because if I came inside this happened!

Had to leave the backdoor open because the handyman going in and out all day so when I would come inside so would Miss Diva and Groucho. Miss Diva would even weave her way around all the piles of tools and stuff in the diningroom to get to me. If I hide from Miss Diva and Groucho they would both cry so much that no one could stand the noise.
So I spent the day getting wood in for the cold snap coming tonight. I enjoyed the fall colors and I watched the leaves falling so fast that I couldn't see a single spot where I raked yesterday. Miss Diva is finally back in her pen. Groucho is finally taking a nap on the back of the sofa (unless I get up then he follows me crying) and I am getting ready to build a nice fire in the stove, grab a blanket, a cup of hot chocolate, a book and settle down for the night. I just love cold weather and we are suppose to get down into the 20's the next couple nights. Now if I could just have a little of that white stuff falling from the sky it would be a perfect night!
