Please Don't Laugh at My Baby

My name is Sister and I was upset when my sister "Sister Sister" hatched some baby chicks and mom moved her to her own little house with a nice fenced in yard. I wanted to hatch baby chicks too! Mom finally let me have some eggs to sit on so I could be a mommy like Sister Sister. While I sat on my eggs I dreamed of how cute my chicks would be and how I would teach them to scratch and hunt for worms and insects. I would teach them everything they would need to know to become a good grown up chicken. I have to rethink my teaching. I am now the proud mom of this little cutie
Yes, I know its a duckling! Please don't laugh at my little baby! Mom is going to let us stay on the nest a couple more days incase some of my other eggs hatch. (If they do they will be big chicks, bantam chicks, and ducks)She will then move us to our own little house with a nice fenced in yard. I know I will be the only mom here with a mixed family but I am still proud of my duckling and any other babies I might have!

Nine Days Old

Can you believe they are 9 days old already? They still haven't figured out they can each have a side of mom. Poor Diva.

Sammi said it was so hot today she could just die. I actually thought she did till she heard the cookie bag and come running.
Killer has turned out to be a awesome mother hen. She is teaching her little chick all the things it will need to survive. I am very proud of her even if I still have marks from where she bit me while showing our weekend company her chick. She came at me full force but at least our guest know how she got her name!
I have spent the day looking for my AWOL iguana. We put Bud in his summer home but had forgotten we had loosened a board on the back side to get eggs out when we had a hen in there last week. He was sunning in his yard when I left to get goat feed and gone when I returned about 30 minutes later. We have searched the trees, under all the buildings, in the woods, on the neighbors no trespassing property, but no Bud. William thinks he made a run for the swamp and if he did we will never find him. I am hoping he will come back. I have left the board off and his heating pad on and his food and water ready. I have even went out with a flashlight to see if I see eyes shining in the trees. I am just sick he is missing but glad its hot right now so he won't get a chill. The handyman has been searching under the house and under everything he sees . He is afraid Bud will come out and surprise him. Bud knows Wayne is afraid of him so I wouldn't be surprised to hear Wayne scream if he finds him. I promise to take photos of my jewelry tonight. I have been outside all day so haven't had a chance. It has been so hot I have emptied all the water buckets several times today so I could give everyone fresh cold water. The goats drank 3 5 gallon buckets almost empty. Hopefully we will get rain and a cool spell soon instead of this record breaking heat.

I'm BaaaaaaaaK!

Hope everyone had a wonderful Memorial Weekend. William made it home late Friday night and we hit the floor running Saturday morning. His son Ray and family came down for the day so we wanted to grill porkchops for lunch and I had the other food to prepare. I cheated and bought a chocolate pie for dessert. Sharon and I hit a few yardsales but there wasn't much out there. We enjoyed sitting on the deck and talking. They really came down to see the babies and Sharon wanted to take Brown Robyn home but Diva and I said no. Williams niece Crystal came down Saturday afternoon and got to eat leftovers from our lunch. She spent the night with us and helped with the animals Sunday morning. We had a guy William worked with and his wife and 2 boys coming down for lunch so we had to straighten up and get everything ready for another cookout. We did steaks, chicken, hamburger and hotdogs so we would be sure everyone had what they liked to eat. I fixed salad, veggies, etc with strawberry shortcake for dessert. Williams daughter Lisa and her husband stopped by for supper on their way home from Virginia. They got leftovers from that cookout. Everyone loved Diva's babies but Diva was a little nervous of all the visitors. Yesterday it was just William and I and we spent the whole day working around here. We trimmed all the goats hooves, raked and cleaned the whole goat pen. Cleaned all the water buckets, and swimming ponds for the ducks and geese. We got Bud moved to his old summer home till Wayne gets his new one built. He is happy to have a place he remembers and his heating pad back. He sleeps on that thing even when its 100 degrees! We washed Williams big truck and sorted thru some of the things he had inside. His winter items are now sitting in the diningroom for me to put away and he has summer sheets, blankets, clothes, etc in his truck. We ran out of time and didn't get the inside all clean like we wanted but we will do that next time he comes home. All in all our weekend was so busy it seemed to fly by. William left today for Wisconsin and I am doing laundry, cleaning house and putting away things so I can get to the soap shop and get orders and gift baskets out. Those that won Diva's contest and the cottage drawing will get their items soon as I will be shipping them tomorrow. I promise to spend time tonight reading everyone's blog and catching up. Oh! William brought me a beautiful handmade hammock from Mexico and THREE! beautiful sterling silver necklace and earring sets.I will take photos later when I have more time. Have a great week!

Today has been a busy, crazy day. Everytime I started a project I got called away to help someone. I dropped my cellphone in my water tub. Spent alot of time on the road doing errands for everyone but me.William will be home tomorrow. His son and family will be down to see the baby goats Saturday and his niece will be spending Saturday night with us so I am trying to tidy up and fix some meals ahead. I want to enjoy the visits and not be busy.We will be having a couple of cookouts this weekend and eating out on the deck. Its suppose to be hot and sunny.
Worked on my outdoor "bathroom". Got the tub cleaned out and covered my water plant pots with pebbles to keep the soil from dirting the water. Finally got my turtle fountain working and the birdbath fountain going. Now all I need to do is hide the electrical cords.
William got to stop by and visit with Carol and her husband Terry on his way home from CA. Terry did some repairs on Williams truck and they also fed him some really wonderful meals cause I heard how yummy they were from William several times. I am glad William got to meet them since he couldn't be home when they visited here. Carol's granddad has passed away so please stop by and let her know you are thinking of her and her family.

The boys are running around the place like they are grown! Yesterday they couldn't get in and out of the stalls by themselves. Today its as easy as can be for them to go anywhere they want. They run from one end of the pen to the other kicking up their heels. They don't look or act like newborns :(

Below are photos with Brown Robyn in the front. Thought Ms. Robyn might like to see her namesake without Frosty Dan hogging the picture.
And one of Frosty Dan so he won't get his feelings hurt.

Girls Night Out?

Went out to check on the babies before settling in for the night and this is what I found.
Nitro taking care of his sons while Diva and Sammi were out enjoying the night.

Mother's Love

Its finally ready! In honor of Diva becoming a mom I made a new soap. I haven't placed it in my soap shop yet but the 3 ladies that guessed the right date of Diva's delivery will be receiving the first bars in a few days. I have been working on the scent since Diva got pregnant and have finally got it how I wanted it to smell. The mold is of a nubian mother nursing her kid. The scent is a mixture of a butterfly fragrance, amazing grace fragrance, rain fragrance and just a drop of peach blossom fragrance along with ground dried peach peel. I love it! So for the first time ever........ Mother's Love

And The Winners Are

Mary from: http://novaks.blogspot.com/

Lisa from:http://heartofthenest.blogspot.com/ . They all picked the right date and Diva said it didn't matter what time, sex or how many as she was so happy she wanted all 3 of them to have a gift basket of her soaps! So ladies email your mailing addy and Diva and I will get your basket with a bar of "Mother's Love" soap made in a mold of a mother goat with her kid. This soap hasn't been put in the soap shop yet so you will be the first 3 to try it. And to finish off the day with some nicer photos than the last post.
Diva's bag is finally down enough that Brown Robyn can stand and nurse! No his collar isn't pink. Its really red with blue designs on it but the photo makes it look pink.
Frosty Dan was napping till he heard his brother having a snack. He just had to get up and go have a little milk himself.

Birthing Story

You ask for it so here it is and as usual it was a adventure! Diva had contractions off and on Sunday night. Being the over anxious mom I am I took my blanket and pillow and spent the night with Diva. I rubbed her back and hummed to her and she slept a little bit but not much. About 6am Monday Diva was starting to hurt! I cleaned up her stall, put away my blanket and put down clean straw. Gave Diva a bucket of water laced with molasses to give her energy and got the birthing bag. We were ready to get this over with! Diva would lay with her head in my lap for a little while and I would rub her head and sing to her (poor girl cause I can't carry a tune) then she would turn around and lay with her back to me and I would rub her back. It even seemed like she would encourage me to lift her tail and check. She didn't seem to happy when I would shake my head and tell her not yet. About noontime I knew she was really hurting and stressing so I gave her Owe-eze. Its a herbal mixture I purchased from http://fiascofarm.com/herbs/formulas.htm#owese and it seemed to help her. 12:30 she is pushing and crying but nothing is happening. I told Diva I was going to scrub up and check her out. She looked at me like hurry up and do something. Scrubbing my hands with betadine and then using more OB lube than anyone should ever need I tried to find the problem. The babies were still way down the birthing canal so told Diva it was up to her to push them on their way. I had been up all night and to give myself a shot of caffeine since I don't drink coffee I grabbed a can of mountain dew. I had a couple of swallows and sat it down and forgot about it. Diva leaned over and started licking the top of the can about 1pm so I poured some out for her and she ended up drinking the rest of the can! This seemed to give her that extra spurt of energy she needed cause she started pushing hard! The sack the first kid was in hadn't burst yet and each time she pushed the "bubble" would come partway out and when she stopped pushing it went back in. This went on for 10 minutes when I decided to pop the sack next time it came out. Once it was popped the kid starting trying to come out. One hoof was coming out but the other was bent back. I reached in and straightened its foot and Brown Robyn started making his appearance. His head was big so I helped pull as Diva pushed and out he came. I wiped his mouth and he started crying right away. I cleaned him a little andplaced him on his pad in front of Diva as there was another "bubble" coming. I just went ahead and popped it as I didn't want to have to wait any longer. Once I popped it out came the hoofs then another big head was trying hard so I pulled when she pushed and out flew Frosty Dan! I wiped his mouth and he started crying while Brown Robyn was already trying to stand up while Diva was licking him clean. I cleaned up Frosty Dan, changed the pad Brown Robyn was on and laid the both of them in front of Diva. She was so happy! She actually looked like she was smiling at me. I cleaned up Diva and the mess I had made and went and got Diva some warm water with molasses. She drank every bit of it and part of another bucket. I gave her some feed with molasses and she ate all of that. Finished cleaning up the boys and changed their pad for a clean one and started working on getting them to nurse. Frosty Dan took to it right away. Brown Robyn though he weighed the least he is the tallest so it was harder for him. Diva's bag was so full it was hanging low to the ground. Frosty Dan got down on his knees to suck while Brown Robyn just kept bumping Diva's bag and crying. I would help him get started nursing but he didn't want to stay on his knees and would lose the teat and start crying. Being me I just reached in my birthing bag and brought out a bottle, milked Diva alittle and filled the bottle. Brown Robyn sat in my lap and drank that bottle dry in a matter of seconds. Diva's bag is much better today and the boys are nursing good but I still get some of her milk and give the boys a bottle just so I can bond with them too. Diva doesn't seem to mind at all. She is licking my face while I am feeding them. I must tell you that while Diva was crying and pushing (and that is a painful loud cry by the way) Nitro was in the next stall snoring! He actually slept thru the whole thing! Sammi was laying out in the sunshine but would come and peek in once in a while. She was kind and smart enough to know what was going on. Diva was crying, Nitro was snoring and I was getting mad. How dare he lay over there and snore! I promised William I would take pictures since he couldn't be here. It was easy during the early labor part but when things started happening it was hard! I was pulling with one hand and taking pictures with the other. My batteries died and thank goodness my headset was still hanging in the stall ( I had been listening to books on tape the night before) cause I grabbed it (one handed) and took the batteries and put in the camera. (one handed) Some of the photos are a little blurry but if you want to see the boys birth here they are. If you don't like graphic photos then you might want to stop right here. Diva and sons are fine today and have even been on a walk around the pen enjoying the sunshine. I will take some photos later. They already look like they have grown inches!

The above photo shows the tent like hump goats get on their backside when they go into labor. Diva would get a small one several times the last few weeks but this was how hers looked Sunday night.
This is Sammi coming to check on Diva and if you look close you can see Nitro in the background sleeping. This was early Monday morning.
The above photo is right before lunch Monday. Diva is pushing out with her hind legs. When she started pushing with front and hind into my legs and stomach I knew we were close!
This is the start of the "bubble" pushing out. The string of goo hanging is on the outside of the bubble. The bubble is actually the sack of fluid the kid is in but needs to burst before the kid comes out. And yes there is a little poop. I am surprised as hard as she was pushing there wasn't alot more.

One hoof out and me finding the other.
Here comes Brown Robyn!
Diva checking out her baby. The green stuff on his lips is electrolyte paste. Its a energy boost I gave them till they got to nurse.
Here comes Frosty Dan!
Here are the boys getting cleaned up by mom while I clean her up. I also inserted Diva with a antibiotic so she wouldn't get a infection from my hand even though I had scrubbed really well. I just wanted to make sure she will be okay.

And just a few minutes after birth Frosty Dan is down on his knees with his butt in the air nursing. Brown Robyn said he was too tired to stay on his knees and just laid down.

I have never had any experience with goats kidding. I assumed it would be like the dairy cows we had. You walk out one morning and there is a calf. Sometimes but rarely we had to help a cow deliver. I sure got my experience the hard way! I am sure there are things I should have done but didn't and things I did I shouldn't. The most important thing is Diva and I worked well together and did the best we could to make her deliver as easy as possible. To make sure she and the boys were healthy with as little stress as possible. I am so very very thankful for Molly and her husband at Fias Farm Site! http://fiascofarm.com/goats/index.htm They not only give you step by step information. They have photos to show you each step of labor and delivery. Without them I would have been a basket case and not known what to do. I am so happy its over and Diva and sons are fine but I am so also so blessed things went fairly well yesterday. I can no longer say: I don't know nothing about birthing no kids!

Killer has hatched out a chick. I am going to give her another chance to see if she will be a mommy and take care of it. If she does I will let her keep and raise it, if not then Sister Sister gets another chick. I visited my neighbor Fran this afternoon and had to take a picture of her daughter Wendy's dog. Chi Chi was so cute in her sun hat!

Diva is still waddling along. I have a Uncle Sam hat to take her picture for Memorial Day. Told her I wanted to wait till she had her figure back but looks like that will be awhile.

Nothing

I have nothing to post about today. Diva is still waddling along. Nitro is being a pain in the you know what. He doesn't want me paying attention to anyone but him. Sammi is being sweet little Sammi. Tiger had 4 kittens instead of just the 2 I saw yesterday. They are full of spitfire! Sister, Killer and Henny Penny are all wanting to sit on eggs so I have to fight all 3 to get the fresh eggs and make sure they all have equal amount of sitting eggs though they steal from each other when I leave. Moleen, Larry and Curly are getting along with the Bonnie and Clyde the big geese so let them out of their pen to interact with all the other feathered friends. Set out some plants, cleaned the goat pen again and just piddled around since everything was all wet from the rain we had. Got a long to do list for tomorrow so hopefully I will have more to post. Have a great weekend!

Whats New Around the Homestead

Sammi always sleeps with her head resting on her side. Looks uncomfortable to me. Tiger the wild cat that didn't want anyone touching it but gets to live here forever (http://hiddenhavenhomestead.blogspot.com/2006/08/little-davie-has-passed-away.html) and that we thought was a boy surprised us. He is a she and she has been hiding her babies from us. Their eyes are open and they are running around everywhere. They are also adorable!

I will be finding homes for a couple of cute kittens! Moleen, Larry and Curly are growing! They are bigger than my grown chickens and they aren't even a month old yet.
Did you know that pea hens spread their tail feathers like a peacock? I didn't till I saw Juliet doing it.

Diva is in the home stretch of her pregnancy. I really thought she would have kidded by now. She is due next Wednesday but still hoping she doesn't wait till then as she is very miserable

Her bag is so full her hind legs are spread apart and she has a hard time walking. And we have a new bunny! Her name is Dotty and she is beautiful. Hopefully I will find a male that looks like her so we can have dotty babies.
