Uncle Bob

Uncle Bob was my mother's brother. He retired from the phone company and spent his retirement years hiking parts of the Appalachian Trail each year. He almost made it to the end but last year he had to be air lifted off the trail for what was later found to be stomach cancer. We all helped him and his wife Judy celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary a few months ago. He took me on the hike back into where he and mother were born and raised . We hiked 2 miles in and 2 miles out. I had a hard time keeping up with him. He showed me where the house use to stand, where the garden was and where they played in the creek. He helped me find pieces of dishes, pottery, etc to make my daughters shadow boxes for Christmas with things from their Nannies homeplace. Uncle Bob was a quiet but a very kind and loving man. He could pull a prank with the straightest face and you would fall for it everytime. Uncle Bob was not only a very special uncle, he was the best dad and grandpop to his children and grandchildren. He won't ever get the chance to finish hiking the trail because he is on a wonderful new journey. Uncle Bob died this afternoon.

Peggy, Uncle Bob sounds like a wonderful "regular guy". You celebrate your family, living and dead in such a lovely way. It must be very wonderful to feel so connected to family reaching back through time.

Sounds like your folk lived and grew up, "up the holla". I would have loved to hear Uncle Bob's recollections.

Oh, Peg, I'm so sorry that your Uncle Bob had to leave today. I remember you telling us about your trip to the old homeplace and how much it meant to you. I'm sure it meant a lot to him, too, getting to share it with you. You have both been blessed to be in such a loving family and now you are blessed with wonderful memories. Hugs to you, my friend and my condolences to all the family.

Peggy, I am so sorry to hear that you have lost your Uncle Bob. I know that you were probably expecting this to happen soon by the way you were talking when you all were together last time this picture was taken. I am so happy that you all got to be together one last time. We never know when it will be that we all get together here on earth for our last time, but if we are all Christians we will see each other again one day in Heaven...Sandy
