Easter Eggs!

I went with my friend Jane to find and purchase a silky rooster and I ended up with aracuana rooster and hen. They lay the blue, green, and sometimes pinkish colored eggs. The lady also gave me two geese eggs and Jane is going to hatch them for me. We then went thrift storing and flea marketing which I will post photos of my buys later. We came home and chased my new hen that flew out of the coop. When we caught her we clipped her wing so she wouldn't fly out again. Then we went to pick up the rooster for Jane that we couldn't get till this afternoon and I ended up purchasing 2 young aracuana hens. I have the aracuana's in the teen dorm. Mrs Mighty Chicken and Jackie O are back in with the big hens. The frizzy teens are free to run around the yard with the guineas that I took out of the duck lot. I had to put chicken wire around my strawberry plants because that was the first thing they went after. I am tired from playing musical chickens but at least I will have colored eggs for Easter! Thanks Amy for letting me know about the aracuanas.

As I understand it, the Araucana chickens have cheek tufts and are "rumpless" - don't have a tail. The Ameraucanas are related, but may or may not have cheek tufts, and have an ordinary chicken tail. Both breeds are wonderfully colorful, and my Ameraucanas are not only nice (that is, they don't overtly pick on any of the other chickens, that I've seen, and they don't mind if I pick them up and hold them) but they are among my most consistent layers. Mine lay green eggs, and I would have more Araucanas or Ameraucanas in a heartbeat. Check out the Feathersite for more info:

You are becoming a real "feather fancier" with your recent additions. My one hen that laid colour eggs was very ordinary looking and small. The eggs I thought were pale green, not blue. In the spirit of an old chemistry teacher I had, "the colour is the colour I say it is". They were pale blue.
