Friday's Favorites

Tee always has such good posts. Sometimes she writes about family and feelings and sometimes she writes about great new gadgets, books, places, etc. Whatever she writes about I enjoy reading but my favorites are posts on blessings.

There are days when I just need something to make me laugh or at least smile. I always know where to go. Jeanette always makes me do both. Where she finds some of her jokes I have no ideal but they make me laugh and I read them to William and get the joy of his laughter too. She is also a avid bowler but its not the kind of bowling I know. Looking forward to learning more about her sport.

I enjoy stopping by The Sparrow's Nest each day. Now I want to have my own Ebenezer's. Got to get me some small rocks and start writing on them.

Woodsy writes about his daughter's new boyfriend. All I can say is EVERY young girl needs a boyfriend like hers!

This whole blog amazes me everytime I visit! A young couple and their daughter are building a home on their own. They are doing most of the work and homeschooling. Every day is filled with things that have to get done but they always find time to stop and enjoy each day.

Last but not least is Caroline who has a new baby... it has 4 legs but is beautiful! And speaking of 4 legged babies we hope Sammi will be kidding the end of October or first of November. (we missed seeing her and Nitro together after she came in season so aren't sure of the date) and Diva is going to be a mommy again on Feb. 15th give or take a few days. We know what date Nitro romanced her!

Hope you enjoy some of my favorites this week. Have a wonderful weekend and count those blessings no matter how small.

Mother's Love

Its finally ready! In honor of Diva becoming a mom I made a new soap. I haven't placed it in my soap shop yet but the 3 ladies that guessed the right date of Diva's delivery will be receiving the first bars in a few days. I have been working on the scent since Diva got pregnant and have finally got it how I wanted it to smell. The mold is of a nubian mother nursing her kid. The scent is a mixture of a butterfly fragrance, amazing grace fragrance, rain fragrance and just a drop of peach blossom fragrance along with ground dried peach peel. I love it! So for the first time ever........ Mother's Love

Whats New Around the Homestead

Sammi always sleeps with her head resting on her side. Looks uncomfortable to me. Tiger the wild cat that didn't want anyone touching it but gets to live here forever (http://hiddenhavenhomestead.blogspot.com/2006/08/little-davie-has-passed-away.html) and that we thought was a boy surprised us. He is a she and she has been hiding her babies from us. Their eyes are open and they are running around everywhere. They are also adorable!

I will be finding homes for a couple of cute kittens! Moleen, Larry and Curly are growing! They are bigger than my grown chickens and they aren't even a month old yet.
Did you know that pea hens spread their tail feathers like a peacock? I didn't till I saw Juliet doing it.

Diva is in the home stretch of her pregnancy. I really thought she would have kidded by now. She is due next Wednesday but still hoping she doesn't wait till then as she is very miserable

Her bag is so full her hind legs are spread apart and she has a hard time walking. And we have a new bunny! Her name is Dotty and she is beautiful. Hopefully I will find a male that looks like her so we can have dotty babies.

Come On Now!

You can't have all the sympathy for Diva and Sammi. How would you like to live with one pregnant and one raging hormonal female? Diva doesn't want me around her at all. The looks she gives me since being pregnant almost seems evil! She seems to forget that when she becomes a mom I will be a dad and have responsibilities too. Diva gets the most brushing, the sweetest carrots, the first cookie and most of the attention. Then there is Sammi. Sammi with the raging hormones. Sammi that one minute wants to play and run with me. The next minute is biting and being mean to me for no reason. Its rough being the only male in the pen. Everything is my fault. When Diva is feeling bad its my fault. When Sammi is moody its my fault. Or so they both tell me. I try my best to protect and take care of them. They use to want me to sleep next to them at night so they would feel safe. Now if I try to lay down beside them they bite me! Let me tell you people its hard living with these two does! You never know what kind of mood they will be in and that will change in the blink of an eye. Mom isn't any better. She is in our pen more than she is in her house. I am so tired of being woke up in the middle of the night by her flashlight. And if she spends another night in Diva's stall and wakes me up for snoring I am not going to be responsible for my actions! What is wrong with the females around this homestead? Come on people have some compassion for me and what I am having to deal with!

Hi everyone. Its just me, Diva. I told mom to stay in the soap shop today and give me a break. You would think she is the one that is pregnant. Everytime I moan she comes running. Everytime I burp she comes running. Everytime I go lay down in my stall she comes running. She has this box in my stall that listens to every sound I make. I tried to take the box down but I couldn't reach it. I tell you mom is driving me crazy! She makes me take my vitamins every morning. She lifts my tail 50 million times a day. Lord only knows what she is looking for but it sure is embarrassing! She is feeling my back and sides everytime she comes out. She keeps saying she wishes she could touch her fingers to her thumb when she is feeling my spine and tailbone. All I know is that I need a break from this lady that use to be nice, calm , and sweet . I like my space, if you know what I mean. I like to lay down to sleep and not look over and see her laying on her blanket watching me breathe. I keep telling her that I will call out really loud when I go in labor so she won't miss a thing but she doesn't believe me. She has a bag packed by the door with things she says she might need when I kid. I saw her list of things and I never needed any of them when I kidded before but Mom thinks she knows best.

1. Emergency phone #'s ( My family don't have phones so who does she think she will call?)

2. Empty feed sacks ( she thinks things are going to be messy. I KNOW they will)

3. Paper towels and clean rags ( from the pile of clean rags she has you would think I am going to have a whole herd of kids for her to wipe dry)

4. Puppy Pads ( She has a ton of these for the kids to lay on while I clean them. I hope she doesn't need them all!)

5.Big trash bag (With all she has packed I know she will need a trash bag when things are done)

6. Flashlight ( I just hope she doesn't lift my tail and shine it every 5 seconds)

7. Scissors ( She thinks she might have to use them to trim the cord but I doubt it)

8. Betadine ( To clean her hands incase she has to go in and turn one of the kids. Please oh please don't let her have to do that!)

9.OB Lube ( for reason above and again please oh please don't let this happen!)

10. Iodine ( for kids umbilical cord)

11. Empty film canister (to put the iodine in to dip the kids umbilical cord in)

12. Dental Floss ( incase she has to cut the cord she can use this to tie it off)

13. Baby bottle ( incase one of the kids needs it or in Mom's mind incase I have more than 2 babies)

14. Syringe ( incase she needs to clear the kids nose and mouth to help it breathe)

15.Molasses, warm water and grain ( this ideal I like as its for me after I give birth. Mom may need to have something stronger when its all over, think I will add to her list)

16. Camera ( any bets on how calm she will be to take pictures?)

These are the things I am having to put up with around here. I know when the time comes mom will be here for me and I will be glad she is but until then does anyone need a crazy lady?

No News

Edited to add Diva is out walking about the pen and no more contractions. Guess the babies were bullying for who was going to come out first and gave Diva some pain. The "tent" like hump goats have when they are having contractions has gone down. Other than that things are the same and its a wait and see game. I am going to stay inside tonight and enjoy my company with the baby monitor close at hand. Maybe without me there she will have a surprise waiting for me when I do bed check. :)

Since 10 am diva has not had anymore contractions. She is still in her stall mostly sleeping or resting but no moaning, crying or pushing. I am keeping an eye on her while I do things around the yard and will let you know when things pick up again. I am going to be totally gray headed before these babies are born.

Goodbye April... Hello May.. Hurry Up Diva!

I am getting my guestroom all ready for Carol and her husband. They are flying in to Raleigh/Durham tomorrow and doing some sightseeing around Winston Salem. Carol you must take a trip to Pilot Mountain. Its about a 45 minute drive from Winston. If you watched Andy of Mayberry its what he referred to as Mount Pilot. Anyway, Carol will be coming here Thursday and staying until Sunday. I am so excited to meet her and her husband. William had planned on being here but the sailboat race has put him behind a few days on getting home. Diva and I will be here to welcome them to the homestead though and I think they will have a nice relaxing time. I went next door and trimmed my neighbors red tips for the goats. Takes me longer to trim than it does for them to eat.

You would think I had given them candy as fast as they eat it. While I am trimming they are standing at the end of the fence crying for me to hurry. Diva just loves red tips. I was checking her ligaments and noticed the babies have dropped. Where she was so wide before. She is now slimmer on her sides but her belly is hanging lower, She eats and sleeps. Thats all she does right now but can't blame her. Its too hot to carry that weight around and do anything else. Rachel gave me some really good names for the babies and I have a couple floating through my mind but its not too late to give me your suggestions. Who knows, maybe one day Diva will decide to have those babies so I can name them!

A Day In Photos

I added the first photo after going out to check on Diva. She is stretching and pushing her head against the side of her stall and digging like she is making a nest. No signs of contractions so guess she is just getting ready and enjoys seeing me get excited. Other than that it has been a quiet day at hidden haven. Getting some much needed cleaning done and letting the animals enjoy the sunshine.

Diva is doing fine today. She isn't moaning and has spent part of the day out of her stall. She has even eaten some of her feed along with some alfalfa. I think the babies were just moving into position and making her very uncomfortable. I sat with her and brushed her till a little past 12:30 last night. She finally drifted off to sleep in the middle of my birthing stories. Guess I bored her to sleep but at least she slept and I came inside and slept with the monitor on. I am guessing the 2nd for kidding and William is saying the 6th. I think it would be nice for her to have them on Mothers Day the 13th but knowing Diva she will be punctual and have them the 23rd. I don't see how she can go that long without exploding though. I am just wanting her to be comfortable no matter when she has them. It breaks my heart when I hear her crying and moaning. Other news is William is competing in a sailing race! He is part of a crew in the Ensanada International. They are qualifying today and the race starts tomorrow. He is so excited and so am I. He is always working so hard that I am glad he gets to take a few days off. I told him its hard work sailing a boat much less being in a race. He will be tired but happy at the end of the race. The gosling's have grown so much! They are swimming most of the day now and making a mess the rest of the time. I am trying to handle them as much as possible so they will be tame and come to me when they grow up.

Udderly Soon I Hope

Marci ask me to take a picture of Diva's udder. One of the signs that she will kid soon is if her bag fills up and tightens. If you are interested here are some other signs of labor; http://www.fiascofarm.com/goats/prenatalcare.html#labor There are also graphic photos of labor and kidding if you want to view them. I am so thankful for this site as I have used it alot for information the past few months. But anyways here are pictures of Diva's udder. Please don't tell her I posted them or she will be so embarrassed! LOL

So Marci what do you think? Do you think she will actually go till May 23? I just don't see how she can carry that weight for that long. She is so miserable.

Listen People!!

Do I look like I like carrying all this extra weight around? I want to have these babies as much or even more than you want me to! Do you know how long it takes me to get this body down to rest? Or how long it takes me to get back up?
Come on people! I have ears. I can hear when you talk about how HUGE I am (yeah I heard you mom). I can hear when you say you wish I would hurry up. Don't you think I would if I could! How would you feel if your belly was this big?
I am tired people! Tired of carrying all this weight around. Tired of not being able to run. Tired of not being able to sleep much because of all the feet kicking me. Tired of having to pee all the time. I am just plain tired! So if I am not my usual diva self please excuse me. If I don't look cute when you take pictures of me... too bad. If I want you brushing me and talking to me all hours of the night... do it! Now if you don't mind I am going to get mom to brush the alfalfa off my back so I can take a nap. When I do have these babies I am sure mom will let you be the first to know and please forgive her when she goes crazy with baby pictures. See you later

You Think I Will Have How Many??

Yes, I am still pregnant! And I am not getting up from here till I am good and ready. I have 49 more days to go before I get my girlish figure back. Believe me I am ready for the kids to come out! Mom has been giving me daily vitamins and herbs but what I really want and can't get enough of is baby carrots. Not regular size carrots cut or broken up. No those will not do at all! I want baby carrots. Lots and lots of baby carrots. Don't even try to get between me and baby carrots. Dad has been teasing mom and saying I am only going to have one kid. Personally I wish he was carrying around what I had inside me and he would change his mind! Mom thinks twins but is wishing for triplets. I am hoping her wish doesn't come true. I had triplets my first pregnancy and twins my second time so will be very happy to have twins this time too. I never got to be a mom before. My kids were taken right away so they would bond with their human mom. Mom says I get to raise these babies myself. I will get back to you on how it goes. Meanwhile mom has come up with a contest. She is going to give away a special gift basket full of goodies to the winner. All you have to do is leave a comment on the day you think I will deliver and how many kids you think I will have. Its rare but we can have as many as 4. (Don't get carried away on that number!) My due date is May 23rd but we goats can deliver a week early or late. Of course mom has to show more pictures of my pregnant belly to help you with your guesses.

So go ahead and give it your best guess. Mom will post the winner after I deliver along with tons of pictures (you know she gets carried away with that camera). She will also post a picture of the gift basket as soon as she gets off her lazy behind and fixes it. (Don't tell her I said that as I am craving my baby carrots again)

In The Groove

Mom to be doing what she does best- eating!
I have moved Sammi away from Nitro so she can have a break from him. I have already been to the feed store for alfalfa. Gave the rabbits new straw for bedding. Flower should have babies next weekend. Gotten 2 soap orders ready for shipping and listed 3 more items in my ebay shop. The day is going great so far. I still have to haul off more trash from yesterdays sorting adventure, load the trailer with the yardsale items and cover with trap as its suppose to rain tonight and tomorrow. I still need to set out my lavender and rosemary. Need to worm Nitro and Sammi and give Ms. Diva her vitamin E injection. I have a ton of laundry, wallpaper border to hang and a gift I need to work on as well as a mountain of paperwork but I am getting lots done! If you get bored take a peek at my ebay shop. If you are looking for something special or collecting certain vintage items let me know as I have boxes and boxes of items left from the antique/ collectible shop. If I have what you want I won't list it on ebay. Well its off to finish outdoor projects before the rain hits. Have a wonderful day and don't forget to count your blessings... especially the small ones.

Princess Diva

Once upon a time in the land of Beaver Dam Farms there lived King Bravo And Queen Sylvia.
They were very happy with their life at Beaver Dam and thought nothing could ever change that happiness. But one day Queen Sylvia found out something that would bring even more happiness to her and King Bravo. They were going to have a baby! 5 months later Princess Frosty Diva was born. She lived in the land of Beaver Dam for 3 years before a lady from a far away kingdom come to take her away. Princess Diva was sad to leave her home but excited and happy to start a new life and adventure at Hidden Haven. Princess Diva was truly treated like a princess. All she had to do was cry momaaaaa and the lady would come running to do whatever Princess Diva wanted. Princess Diva soon came to love and bond with the lady of Hidden Haven and the lady loved and bonded with her. Princess Diva had never lived where there weren't others like her but she had the lady and lots of chickens to be part of her herd so she wasn't too lonely. The lady would take Princess Diva on walks. They would spend lots of time together growing closer and closer. Princess Diva loved playing with the chickens, ducks and cats. She wanted to be a mom and have babies of her own. One day the lady of Hidden Haven told Princess Diva that she had found someone just like her that would be coming to live there with them. If Princess Diva liked Prince Nitro from the land of Willow Run then she could marry him and they could have babies of their own. Prince Nitro came to the land of Hidden Haven and was surprised to find he would be sharing a cottage with Princess Diva.

Prince Nitro and Princess Diva took a few days to get to know each other and before they knew it they were in love! They were happy to get married and live in the honeymoon cottage together. Princess Diva was a beautiful bride!
Soon Prince Nitro and Princess Diva had great news for the lady of Hidden Haven. They were going to have a baby or babies in May! Princess Diva was happy that the lady had contacted Beaver Dam so that her family would know she was married and going to have babies. She was also happy to find out the lady was bringing Princess Sammi to Hidden Haven to live. Princess Sammi was born at Beaver Dam too and Princess Diva knew her when they were just kids. But that will be another story for another day. There are always stories to be told at Hidden Haven.

Just Another Day in Paradise

Chatty Cathy has decided not to escape the goat pen anymore. I think she got tired of being chased with a net. She has even stopped being so chatty! She and the other 2 guineas are doing well in their new home. I really must name the other 2 but until now all I ever heard or saw was Chatty Cathy.

Ms. Diva was able to go without her sweatshirt today but have a feeling it will be back on her tomorrow as we are suppose to be getting some bad weather tomorrow night. Nitro wanted his cookies this morning but was in such a hurry to eat them he dropped them on the ground and wouldn't eat them after I picked them up. I put them in his feed bucket and noticed he was eating them before I walked away. This afternoon he wasn't even taking time to chew one before trying to grab another. Diva even ate one this afternoon. She does that now and then but doesn't seem to care for them.

Jackie O and Mrs. Mighty Chicken are still in Hidden Haven Hospital but are getting better every day. Jackie O found a way out yesterday and was scratching around right next to where she got out so was easy to put her back. Both of them are laying eggs so hopefully will be well enough to get back to the chicken pen soon.

Unfortunately Gertrude is a rooster so have changed his name to Gert. He let me pick him up this afternoon for a snuggle but is always starving to death I put him back down to eat. He and the others are truly teenagers as they are never full! I will be moving 5 more this weekend from the teen dorm to join Gert and the big chickens. Moving them after they go to roost works so well.

Sister and Sister Sister are each sitting on 2 brown eggs. They are bantams so when the hatch their chicks they will be surprised at the size. I am hoping my little hospital will be empty and I can put them with the chicks in there. It would be nice for them to keep their babies instead of having them took away. I am going to let Diva keep her babies. She had triplets her first time and twins her second but her owner at the time takes the babies before they have a chance to bond. She bottle feeds the kids. I believe a mom should be able to stay with her babies. She can give them the love and nurturing they need.

I have 30 strawberry plants I am going to set out after this bad weather passes. Last year I had lots of strawberries from my tiered bed but dear sweet Ms. Diva ate them all one day while I was chasing the chickens that had gotten out. I have maybe 3 plants left out of 50. This time I am going to put a wire fence around to protect the plants from all animals. I hope to plant my onions and cabbage in Feb. and am sure I will have to watch Diva and Nitro if they go for a walk. I still have several seed catalogs to go through to finish up my order for spring. Have to enjoy sitting by the fire while I can because it won't be long till it will be working outside till dark.

Sold 5 dozen eggs today to one lady! She has alot of family visiting from overseas. She also wants to buy Daffy or Donald. She bought a bunch of chickens from my neighbor and her dad is going to build her a pen. It would solve the problem of the 2 of them fighting over Sally come springtime. I will have to think about it.

Carrying in the wood today I saw a beautiful woodpecker. I always think of mother and feel like its her way of letting me know she is still with me.

A soap customer didn't get their package and when we tracked it it was in IL and was only going a few towns over from here! The post office said it got put on the wrong truck... duh, you think? But all in all it has been a good day at the homestead. Hope your day has been a happy one.

Thought For The Day: A sense of humor bridges the distance between sadness and joy.

Monday Monday

So far I have seen 4 baby bunnies. I am not touching them so know there are more deeper in the nest. Flower is eating like crazy and even stands still for a couple of scratches behind her ears. Thumper doesn't understand why Flower isn't talking to him through the screen anymore but seems to be OK with everything. Jackie O is still hobbling but putting more weight on her foot each day. Mrs Mighty Chicken has come to live with the teens. I had let my neighbor borrow her to breed with Mighty Chicken (rooster I had given her). Well Mighty Chicken has spurs. Big spurs. He ripped Mrs Mighty Chickens sides really deep. He also gave her a raw spot on her back where he was grabbing her with his beak. I have been putting neosporin on her wounds and then covering that with petroleum jelly to keep the teen chicks from pecking her. They are slowly healing and she is eating and doing fine otherwise. My neighbor is coming over tomorrow and we are going to trim the guineas wings and put them in with the goats. That way I can move the teen chickens in with the bigger chickens. The guineas are so mean and try to bite them and pull their feathers out. Always something going on around here. Nitro and Diva have decided its warmer to sleep together. Went out last night to close them in and they were in the same stall sleeping so left them together. Diva hasn't come back in season so I am happy to say she is pregnant. Betty Boop only has one egg left to hatch and she will hopefully take a much needed break from sitting on eggs. Sister has decided she wants to sit on a nest so I am letting her keep a few eggs. Sister Sister waits patiently for Sister to get up to eat or drink and she moves over to sit on the eggs till Sister comes back. They are sisters so thats why the name Sister and Sister Sister. Still looking for more female ducks before spring. There are a few in the ads I am going to call about. Today has been a cold windy busy day. We had lots of rain but no ice or snow. Calling for a really cold front coming in Thursday so i am hoping it will bring snow with it. Have a nice fire going and a cup of green tea so will relax for a few and then call it a night. Have a great week. Here is my thought for the day:
Making a difference is as close as the hand. Just as each of us has a unique fingerprint, we also have unique talents that can leave a mark where it is needed.
